My work as a family physician in primary care, urgent care, and telemedicine has highlighted a key problem with our healthcare system: timely access to care. The traditional primary care model is broken when primary care doctors are overwhelmed with patients on a daily basis and have an onerous administrative and legal burden to provide detailed, accurate, and timely documentation. Meanwhile, their patients can’t see them for weeks or months. Paraphrasing Yogi Berra, “Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore because it’s always too crowded.”

This can change. It should not be so difficult to see someone for your urgent need and coordinate care with whomever you choose to manage your long-term health. The consumerization of healthcare delivery is only going to accelerate in terms of progress.
